A decision that won't change how the day is viewed one way or the other, but making it official would certainly make planning it more convenient. Who doesn't want a little more convenience? Of course, MLB could do their part in making it more convenient by scheduling one uniform opening day every season instead of staggering it across multiple days and in some cases multiple countries. But most would probably say they recognize the first full slate of games, usually the first Monday of the season, as the official opener. We'll let you how the petition fares once it reaches the president's desk. For now, pat yourself on the back, baseball fans. Your voice has been heard.

“Make Opening Day a Holiday” campaign goes to White House

Now it's up to the White House to respond to a signature campaign that garnered support from baseball fans across the country. The St. Louis-based maker of Budweiser and Bud Light partnered with former Cardinals shortstop and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith on Feb. 24 to make baseball's opening day a holiday. Their petition reads: Its an American tradition, and it deserves to be recognized as an American holiday. Join us in our quest to make sure every American can exercise their inalienable right to celebrate the day those two magical words are uttered for the first time: 'Play Ball!'" Budweiser has been the official beer of Major League Baseball for more than three decades, and Budweiser is featuring the MLB and logos of 23 teams on 6 million cases of beer this year. "Budweiser may have brought this campaign to the forefront and spurred the conversation around Americas National Pastime, but the true accolades go to the fans that supported the petition," Budweiser Director Tom Kraus said in a statement. "This has been a fun way to celebrate the nation's love of baseball and we appreciate the White House entertaining our effort." A-B sought to collect 100,000 signatures on WhiteHouse.gov , a minimum threshold necessary for President Barack Obama's administration to respond to a petition.

A-B reaches 100K signature goal for Opening Day holiday pitch

The campaign launched less than thirty days ago by Budweiser. Cardinals Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith serves as the face of the campaign that asked people to sign a WhiteHouse.gov petition honoring Opening Day as a day of national observance via presidential proclamation. It could take up to 60 days for a decision to be made. This years MLB Opening Day is on March 31. Budweiser, the leagues official beer by the way, will be delivering 2,000 kegs of day-fresh draught Budweiser beer to MLB cities and stadiums across the country next week.
